Capricious Play Update :3/11/10

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to give you a little update on my film. I am currently finished with all the animation and have moved into the rendering process. The film is a total of 5 min and 30 secs. I'm very excited to be this far along at this point in time. I still have a ways to go, but it's lookin' pretty good.

Also, in case you didn't know i will be graduating this May. Also, Excited about this. Hopefully i can score a job before graduation. "Crossing fingers"

Basically nothing but excitement going around here.

So, I've come a long way since i last posted. In that time i have named my film Capricious Play. I now have 2 min and 30 secs fully animated and the first 21 secs fully rendered. I still have about 2 min 45 secs all keyed out that still needs to be in-betweened, but im moving at a good pace. Along with this i have 2 fully rendered shots of my two characters Joe and Caprice to give you move of an idea of what the final will look like.

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to give you a little update on where i am with my thesis. I have alot of it keyed out, but i'm still got a ways to go. I looks like its going to top off at about 5 min and 15 secs at the moment, that is almost guaranteed to change as the project presses forward. I wanted to show ya'll this final render test. This is the look that the entire film will have and i'm very excited about it. Just in case you were wondering this scene doesn't actually appear in my final. I was just using it as a test for the way i want my film to move and be rendered. I might post little scenes as i got along, but probably not the whole thing. I would to keep it fresh. As always thank you for your time.

Senior Thesis Idea 1

So as many of you know this is my senior year of college and as a part of our curriculum we are to produce a student film. Well I had a critic the other day with my film and as it stands it has a lot of work to be done. A little too much to do with my current time limits. So i have opted to start another idea entirely. Fear not, I have an idea already and working hard on making it everything i want it to be. I plan for my next project to be a little less heavy handed. But this is my animatic of my film so far and two render test. I promise to finish this before it's all over.

Writing for the Media, I believe, could also be called "how to not b.s. people." We are learning to talk to people as if they are real people and not idiots and i know that this is the way it needs to be. Not that I didn't practice some of this before, but i did some times get caught up in this "soft language", because in some cases I do understand. Like my mom for instance, she has a legitimately licensed child care service, but i would necessarily insult her by calling her a "baby-sitter". She likes the term "Provider" which i think i very fare, because the thing you think about when you think about baby-sitter is a snotty teenager who might know c.p.r, and that's if your lucky. And I know im back tracking to last classes topic, but i thought about it a little more over the weekend and had to express my feelings, that may also be because she is my mom and I know how hard she worked to get where she is and i think she deserves more credit than the neighborhood baby sitter.

The soft language attack of George Carlin is nothing less than inspiring for me to be as blunt with everyone as i can. jk, but it goes to show you just how sucked in we can get by these words. He hits the nail on the head when it can to the soft language. People try to sugar coat everything just so that we don't have to face the ugly truth. I am kinda believer that the comedians are some of the only honest truth tellers in the world. Think about it, you wouldn't want to really hear a comedian who just lies all the time. I mean i understand that there is some sort of exaggeration in what they are saying, but for the most part its stuff that happened to them at one point or another. Or you could listen to the talking heads on the news networks. Take your pick.

POWER! :Tales from Writing for Media

This past class we talked about the finer point of our persons. By this, i mean what is called Maslow's Hierarchy, which says that there is a recipe for human behavior. Basically, we think about existing (staying alive), then security (finding a shelter and continuous source of food and water), Love, esteem (the acceptance of others), and then at that point we are ready to think about others. This seems to be the most primal of human instinct, but also in the same sense is very true. You wouldn't give others your home if you had nowhere to stay. thinking about this make us all seem so much more well, i want to use the word selfish, but i can't because its not. I think that everyone looks out for themselves first, excluding most parents for their children and some lovers, and then maybe they will be inclined to help. This is a conflicting feeling right now.i mist think on this more......

I when to my first Writing for Media class this past Tuesday dreading a 3 hour writing class that started at 8 in the morning, but was quickly blown away by pure "POWER". I now have a new faith in my school and feel better than ever about this semester than I have before. I know that this will be an enlightening experience that will walk away from with more than just a couple of sloppily written stories. All thanks to my acquiring of "POWER".

My Break : Mock-up Mania

Soo... While I have been on break I have tried really hard to keep busy and not waste my winter break as I did my summer break. So between time with my family and time with my g/f, i was inspired by a fellow classmate to do a mock-up of one of my characters. I just finished up a ceramics class this semester so I was still in the mood to work with my hands. Soo... I decided to do a mock-up of one of my new characters a borg (name still unknown). this is the progress i have made and what I have soo far, and hopefully by the end of the break she will be finished.

This was for our latest project in which we staged a dynamic action. I picked my new character Willy the chicken boy and just have him swinging from a monkey bar. I want to revisit this again and fine tune it. So keep an eye for the revision. I also did this character sheet for Willy. He started out as just a silly sketch, but he has grow since then. I do plan on working the little tigirl into the story at some point, but havn't come up with anything solid yet.

This Week's Madness

This was a project for my pre-prodcution class. The assignment was to go out of usuay style and create a whole new 10 characters. While the final product doesn't look like I did, I did try to do other styles.

Maya Acting / Reaction

this was just another maya practice assignment. The project was to have a character establish a character and then get hit by a ball in the back of the leg and react. I went for a more exaggerated and looney tuney style.

Camera Move Redone

This is the same project as before "Camera Move" the only difference is that it has been in-betweened and that i cut the up to go down in one part, but i think it looks a little better.

These will be the last of the animations for October. And so another month passes....(big sigh) Well, I am learning more about Maya and improving my hand drawn, which is still my main focus. This time around in Maya we tackled walk cycles.

Dramatic Camera / Camera as a Character

Our assignment was to make the camera into a character and use some sort of dynamic movement. This was a alittle tricky for me. Ive never really tried to used extreme camera angles, but I'm really glad we did this because it really helped me feel better about the space my characters exist in and my ability to move the camera around. So altogether helpful. I plan to inbetween this so, watch for a more finalized version of this. Right now its just an animatic

Really happy to be animating again. Especially in Maya (3-D program)! And of course in 2-D again, my real passion.

This is the first time I've ever gotten to animate in Maya. And I think its a step in the right direction. Maybe not the best example, but still....progress.

This is just a weight assignment for our digital class, i know its still 2-d.The assignment was to animated a weighted object like a bucket, shot-put or a wheel barrel. I need to tweek this a little so keep your eye out for my revision.

This was my first really time seeing what after effects could do. Our project was to make a story book using the 3-d layer effects in after effects. I wanted this project to be a little more conceptually based (something i don't usually do). So i played around with a lot of textures. I think I came out a lot better than I still think it did.

This is my End of Sophomore Year Final. It was just a simple character animation that I put some sound and music (from the original x-men animated series). This was just a little homage to my roots. Thanks to everyone who helped me in some way, shape or form. I dedicated this to my family for everything, but that doesn't exclude anyone.

This is just another practice of my new program iStop. This was an all day project, hence the change in lighting outside. Still kinda janky, but its getting there and is fun enough for me to keep messing with it in my spare time. I started out as a duck like creature and morphs into a dog and then is attacked by a clay hand creature or something. i don't know.... Straight Ahead Rules!

Our 3rd Project this semester. This project was a cut out collage animation that is set to a dream. Mine starts out as actually falling into the dream state and the journey to the dream world and then proceeds to few chunks of dreams that I have had before. I really liked doing this kind of stop animation. Although I didn't realize that the camera was only set up for a seven field so you can see the register in the back ground, but oh well. I am very pleased with this project and would like to do more animation like this.

Fire, Wind, and Smoke

This was my first project after a long break. Im ganna be honest and say that this wasn't very good. Figuring out the technical stuff for the fire and especially the smoke, which looks more like fabric, was frustrating. I think I'm happiest with my wind (the cape) even tho there are many problems. I had a lot of trouble with this one. soo... yay..... Not my best work...

This was basically a little wake-me-up for this semester, and a look at what I don't wan to happen...

This one was just a drawing from photograph of a little girl at my mom's daycare. I thought she looked like she was in deep thought. I do realize that the accuracy of the drawing itself is a little off. It actually started off as an expressive drawing project , but after much deliberation I decided it wasn't "expressive" enought. enjoy.

Playing with Photoshop : Intense Texas!!

So yay this is another installment of "Playing with Photoshop" and I was just trying to integrate more characters that i make up and cool backgrounds.

And yes! This expresses my intense feeling for Texas and UT all together. But I do have to say that I wouldn't have any of those feeling if it weren't for the love of my life Monica, who is double majoring in Chemical Engineering and Spanish at the University of Texas. This is just alittle something that i wanted to make for her, cuz she has been soo stressed out with her finals and i know this would make her smile (yay yay, I know CORNY!!!) but I don't care. Hope this makes you smile babe. Love ya.

Yay, so this is another late night just messing around with photoshop. And yes, I do realize that it looks like really bad photoshop this is me just learning. So hopefully, i will get the hang of this. I never used to like coloring my characters before, but I really like working with photoshop and Illustartor. but yay, i don't have a name for this character. But, i really like the giant battery on his back.

This is just a mix of all my animations set to some of my favorite music (AfroCelt) and my final animation which of course is MJ himself. The animations are in order from earliest to my final piece for the semester. No this does not mean I won't be posting anything for a while, just nothing animation related. Im try to do a character a day thing or a week. Something. but yay... I have a month and half break for Christmas. And I am actually working on a colaboration with some of my classmates too, but thats hush hush right now.

Playing with Photoshop

Yay, this is just me really bored and practicing with photoshop. Nothing special, just messing with shading and the gradient tool. This is just one of those characters that I have had for awhile. I really like to show the before and after process. I think it really allows you to realize what a drawings potential is.

Final Self Portrait 07

This is what I have been working on for the past month and a half. This project to a month and half with at least 10 hours each night. The project requirements was to make and animation that was at least 10 seconds long and a maximum of 35 seconds and the animation had to be fully rendered. This was my final project for my first semester at KCAI in the Animation Dept.

I am so happy with it! I came out exactly how i planned it to be, except it had an extra 10 sec, but it ran too long. So I had to cut the animation for the requirements. it sucked. Broke my heart. But i mite do a uncut version later on down the line.

These are the first steps to my self portrait. This is basically all the moves without character. It moves great and the moves are Great, as you can tell MJ is the driving force behind the moves of this piece. I just wanted to show all the process to what it takes to make an animation.

Light Bright and the Seven Supers Animatic

Hey Everyone,

Here is my new animatic for my Designing the Frame Class. An animatic by the way is rough layout for an aniamtion using still images. I created the animatic using After Effects. It took alittle while, and Im not sure it helps tell the story of "Snow Drop", but if anything it tells another really cool story. These are from the frames that were posted on my last post. With alittle thank to a DDR MIX. Which I clipped on Garage band. As you can probably tell, Im no DJ, but I think it helps.

Final Project update

As some of you know I am in the process of working on my final project for the semester. I am half way through it now, so I will hopefully have it up in my blog in like 2 weeks. so Ill try to keep updates going. right now I am rendering and it sucks! so Im just muscling my way through it... pray for me.. Ill need it.

5th Frame

I was having trouble loading this frame fr a while so I hope this works.

This is my final frame. I got tired of that whole "prince saves the princess" bull, so I had her take care of the witch herself. For those of you who don't know in the original Grimm Story, snow white is "Snow Drop" and she's seven. She dies and is put in a glass coffin. Taken by the prince then dropped the glass coffin and she got knocked in the head and the poison apple chunk that was APPERENTLY lodged in her throat gets knocked loose and... she comes back to life. LAME!!! I think you'll like this spin.

My First Frame in my Snow White Remix

If you know the story , which everyone does, this will be fun.This was one of my first real experiences with both Illustrator and Photoshop, I kinda went alittle crazy, but I am totally satisfied with my frames. Try to figure out what scenes are which and if you have any trouble just ask me. they do go in sequencial order so... enjoy.

Animations

So here are the rest of the animations that I have been working on since the year started.

Anticipation

The anticipation animation is pretty self explainitory. We have our "object" enter then hold on our "object" for a few sec (3 i think) and then have it do an exit action. Simple... sorta

MetaMorphosis

The Metamorphosis project was take and object and morph it into a totally different object using either natural or super natural means. This one was really fun and I think is my longest animation so far..... no really saying much i know but this stuff takes time to shell out.

Weight

Simple (or so it seems). Animate a rock, a leaf and a piece of paper. All three have really different rates of falling so that makes them alittle harder to animate. Mainly because its something tat we see all the time so if it doesn't look right its really really obvious.

Walk Cycle

Basics of animations. You gatta do it at one point or another. So yay. This is just studing the walk cycle and how the physics of the whole body works. Looks simple but its totally complicated ( not ridiculously, but close)

So Ive decided to take full advantage of this blog thing and show some of the work I've been doing while I'm here at the Kansas City Art Institute. This is for my family and friends and for anyone who is just bored and wants to see whats going on in Art School. Enjoy.

This is my first animation. Its soo hard to watch now. There are so many obvious mistakes that I'm hoping Ill have time to go back and correct.
